Residents celebrate diabetes month
ALEXANDRA - Hordes of residents commemorated November as Diabetes Month through a five kilometre fun walk on 14 November 2015 sponsored by the Joburg City Council.
On 14 November thousands of Alex residents participated in a 5km fun walk and screening for chronic diseases to commemorate November as Diabetes Month.
The event was held at the Altrec Sports Complex and sponsored by Joburg City Council.
Velisha Thompson of the council’s Region E said the occasion was to raise awareness about ailments such as diabetes that could be prevented and controlled by lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and exercise. “These challenges can be avoided through attitudinal change and I urge people to watch what gets into their mouths and to form and participate in health clubs,” she stated.
Thompson added that the event was also part of the council’s ongoing promotion of health-related activities that include pap smears and screening for high blood pressure, cholesterol and prostrate cancer. “The mayor is at the forefront of this initiative to promote the longevity of the city’s residents,” she concluded.
