Bagwera, more than just a burial club
ALEXANDRA - Bagwera Burial Club, whose name means 'best friend' in Sepedi, is more than just a burial society as it not only ensure a dignified resting place for the friends but extends its services outside the confines of club to cover the community at large.
Alexandra’s Bagwera Burial Club, bagwera meaning best friend in Sepedi, is more than just a burial society.
The club ensures a dignified resting place for its members, but also extends its services outside the confines of the society to the community at large.
Club chairperson Joe Ramasala said it was started in 2010 when one of his friends died and there were not enough resources, financial and otherwise, to bury him. “We talked among ourselves about the possibility of forming a club that could take care of the burial and other needs as they arise,” Ramasala said.
It was at this juncture that Bagwera was born. The club started with four male members, but membership has now increased to 40, including women.
Ramasala said the club also did a lot of other charity work. “We see ourselves not just as a burial club but a charity organisation at the same time. We don’t close the door to anyone who has no financial resources so they can give their loved ones a dignified final resting place.”
He appealed to those with financial muscle to partner with their club to ensure it met its obligations to the people of Alexandra and beyond. “We would love, financial resources permitting, to grow the club and cover the whole country and hence our appeal to those with resources to partner with us in this noble journey.”
