Preparedness only answer to matric pass
ALEXANDRA - There is no magic wand or miracle to achieving a 90 percent pass mark at matric level besides preparedness and dedication from day one of school.
This was said by KwaBhekilanga Secondary School principal, Jubere Silowa, when recounting the school’s strategy that has, in the past three years, enabled the school to top its four counterparts in the area.
Speaking cautiously after the school dropped to 90 percent in 2015 from 94 percent in the previous year and 97 in 2013, Silowa said the preparedness for both teaching and learning should start from the first day of school.
“The preparation is a collective effort of students, their parents and the teachers complementing each other despite the social circumstances of the students and their families who should regard education as important to the child’s future life. Given the appropriate support and enabling environment, any student will excel… and this includes township children,” Jubere said.
As the 2015 class collected their certificates, their successors, last year’s Grade 11s, were attending an orientation class as preparation for their first day of school on 13 January. The school’s deputy principal, David Makwela, highlighted the school’s ethos of hard work, dedication and commitment to the new matrics.
“Despite still leading other areas’ schools, we are not happy with the 90 percent mark and aim for the ultimate 100 percent in 2016. It’s up to others to follow and give us the positive competition which will be in the best interest of Alex schools,” Makwela said.
