Police officer from a police unit in Midrand appears in court

MIDRAND - A police officer from a unit in Midrand who was charged with intimidation, and a suspect arrested for housebreaking and theft, appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court on 4 January.

A resident, who asked not to be named, told Midrand Reporter that in December last year, a complainant, whose home had been broken into in February, said his child had pointed out the suspect, who happened to be at the complex where the complainant lives, as the man who allegedly raped her during the housebreaking incident at the complainant’s house. The officer, who was not on duty at the time was with the suspect and allegedly intimidated the complainant at the complex. The reason for the officer’s presence at the complex at the time is being investigated along with the alleged intimidation.

According to reports, the off-duty police officer allegedly pointed a firearm at the complainant but Ria Sebetsa Security Services officers apprehended him and called the police.

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela stated that the police officer was not from Midrand Police Station but an unnamed police unit.

“The 33-year-old police officer was indeed arrested for intimidation, the other suspect, a 20-year-old was charged for housebreaking and theft that occurred in February 2015, both suspects were released pending further investigations into the matter,” confirmed Tlamela.

She could not comment on the alleged rape as the complainant did not open a rape case or mention it in the housebreaking statement.
