Nedbank cup sets up thrilling encounters
JOBURG - The Nedbank Cup was officially launched on 28 January at the head quarters of the bank in Sandton, with a draw that paired 32 teams into 16 mouth-watering, which will see the two Soweto giants lock horns.
Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs were drawn to play each other in the first round of the Nedbank Cup.
The draw took place at the bank’s headquarters in Sandton, which will see the 32 teams paired in 16 mouth-watering encounters.
Once again the football loving community will be in for a treat as 16 Premier Soccer League, eight National First Division and eight Safa teams all pursue the dream of winning the coveted R7-million prize money.
Dubbed as South Africa’s FA Cup, the tournament is one of Africa’s most lucrative cup competitions with a prize pool of more than R20 million, with the worst performing teams walking away with at least R100 000.
Head of sponsorship and cause marketing at Nedbank, Tobie Badenhorst said, “Football is a lot like managing your finances. You must have a goal, be committed, work hard to attain it, and find the right team to enable you to realise that goal.”
Acting CEO of the PSL, Mato Madlala, said the cup was known for its inspiring stories and giving a platform for raw talent to flourish.
“In nine years of our partnership with Nedbank, we have made it possible for many aspiring players to fulfill their dreams and, in the process, change their lives and that of their families,” he said.
The company recently opened a R1-million multi-purpose sports court at Ivory Park Primary School as part of its sports development programme in partnership with The Sports Trust.
