Gauteng Tourism has a new CEO

JOBURG - Gauteng Tourism's new CEO, Siphiwe Sipho Ngwenya, is ready to take on the challenges associated with bringing tourists to the province and is excited for the big, attractive events set to take place in the coming years.

Ngwenya, the former CEO of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), was confirmed by Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile as the new CEO for Gauteng Tourism.

Speaking on Yfm, the new chief explained that due to the falling rand, it was now an even better time to attract tourists to Gauteng as it was cheaper for them to visit – a statement that may not seem positive to South African citizens – and it’s clear that Ngwenya is set to make the best of a dismal situation.

Bizcommunity noted: “Tourism in Gauteng continues to contribute around 4 percent to the total provincial workforce, and it’s estimated 4 percent contribution to the Gross Domestic Product by region and 9 percent overall nationally, highlights the sector’s importance to the economy of Gauteng and the country.

“In hard numbers we are talking in excess of over 200 000 people employed [in] the sector, contributing in the region of R30 billion per annum to the provincial economy.”

Big numbers do not scare Ngwenya, as the former CEO of the GGDA was chosen for his years of experience in the sector, as well as his strategic mindset.

It is safe to say that tourism in Gauteng is in good hands under the new CEO – and with his work ethic, the province is sure to see a number of positive changes in the years to come.
