Alex boys part of a team off to Paris

ALEXANDRA - Local boys who comprise a team of U13 boys will be on their way to Paris in May for a world football tournament.

Alex boys will be part of the Hatfield VW U13 team which has won a trip of a lifetime to go to Paris and play in a global football showpiece after winning the South African Volkswagen Junior Masters 2015.

Sixteen teams from around South Africa battled it out at Wits University on 11 and 12 December last year for the chance to represent South Africa globally. And after a penalty shootout, the Hatfield VW team came out tops against Lindsay Saker Fourways.

Following a fun but competitive two days of showing their skill and talent, the team will now prepare for the global tournament in France to compete against a number of other teams from around the world.

The Hatfield Group’s longstanding relationship with Highlands Park Football Club naturally meant that the two would collaborate for this year’s Volkswagen Junior Masters tournament. The Lions of the North, as Highlands is popularly known, is mostly made up of boys from Alexandra. After the two-month run-up to the event, training three days a week, the hard work paid off.

“We assembled a team which could compete on a national and international level and [the] win proved that,” said Brad Kaftel, MD of the Hatfield VW Group.

In its fifth year locally, the tournament is one of the few that offers South African youth an opportunity to compete at an international level and identifies and supports local football talent at an early age.

Revelling in their win, the boys have started training for the world stage which takes place from 13 to 16 May this year.
