Worker sentenced to three months for stealing employer’s rings worth R400k
ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Magistrates Court sentenced a Lesotho national working as a domestic worker to three months for the theft of her Sandton based employer's rings valued at R400000.
The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court sentenced a foreign national working as a domestic worker to three months in prison for the theft of her Sandton-based employer’s rings valued at R400 000.
The court heard that Lindy Raubi (25), who had been in employment for six months, was arrested on 24 December last year after her employer, a doctor, discovered her rings missing from her home. The employer recovered two of the rings worth R340 000 from Raubi and the third one valued at R60 000 wasn’t found. The accused claimed she had exchanged the ring for a handbag worth R600 with a street trader in central Joburg who she claimed she couldn’t trace.
The employer asked the accused’s relatives to help her repay the loss in R1 000 monthly instalments to avoid her imprisonment but they refused, resulting in the woman’s arrest and sentencing. In sentencing her, the magistrate took into account that the accused had already been in custody for three months.
