Pirates Rugby Club ready to host Currie Cup

JOBURG - Following their comprehensive campaign in the Currie Cup last season, the Golden Lions Rugby Union is taking rugby back to grassroots level.

Brad Guymer, chairman of Pirates Rugby Club, said they were ready to host the Emirates Lions when they take on Eastern Province in the Currie Cup on 28 May.

Following their comprehensive campaign in the Currie Cup last year, the Golden Lions Rugby Union is taking rugby back to grassroots level. Five clubs were granted the rights to host Currie Cup matches after a tender process was followed. Two matches will be played at Emirates Airline Park (Ellis Park).

“I think it is a unique experience,” said Guymer.

“A lot of people are used to going to Emirates Park to watch Currie Cups.

“People can expect an intimate experience when we host them here at the Pirates Club. It will be more up close and personal and fans will get a chance to interact with the players.”

The Currie Cup is South Africa’s premier rugby competition and has a rich history which dates back to 1889.

The first game of the new Currie Cup season will see the home side take on the Border Bulldogs at the Lions’ headquarters in Doornfontein.

Eastern Province will play the Lions in Greenside at the Pirates Rugby Club, and Griquas will be hosted at Marks Park, the home of the Joburg Bobbies.

The Currie Cup trophy will be on display at all these venues and supporters will be able to have their pictures taken with the trophy.

The Lions Currie Cup programme:

23 April: Blue Bulls (Alberton Rugby Club)

7 May: Cheetahs (Diggers Rugby Club)

28 May: Eastern Province (Pirates Rugby Club)

11 June: Griquas (Jhb Police Rugby Club)

2 July: Griffons (Emirates Airline Park)

16 July: SWD Eagles (Roodepoort Hoërskool).
