Local romcom to take screens by storm

JOHANNESBURG – Mrs Right Guy is a homegrown romance starring local celebrity Dineo Moeketsi and is set to take screens by storm on 27 May.

Directed by Nigerian-born filmmaker Adze Ugah, Mrs Right Guy tells the tale of lovelorn Gugu Hlatshwayo who has been cursed with being the ‘It Girl’ who is wanted by everyone, but constantly finds herself disappointed by love.

Dineo Moeketsi makes her screen debut as Gugu, who finds herself falling for two men, serial seducer Dumile, played by Thapelo Mokoena, and regular good guy Joe, played by Lehasa Moloi.

One man is a surefire way to heartbreak and the other is a guaranteed ticket to true love and happiness, and what ensues is a few hilarious antics that everyone can relate too.

“The storyline about the challenges facing a strong single woman in her search for a mate is highly topical. The film reflects the complications millennials face as they try to find true love,” explained Ugah.

The female power on screen is also reflected behind the scenes as a team of highly experienced film and TV women take charge. Producer and writer Mokopi Shale began her career in media as a radio drama actress in 1998, while producer Kethiwe Ngcobo has been in the industry for 27 years. Cati Weinek, also a producer and writer on Mrs Right Guy, is co-creator of the National Film and Video Foundation’s groundbreaking Sediba script development programme.

Some of the music featured in the film was also created by rising pop star ELO, who filmed the music video for the song used in the movie, right in the centre of Johannesburg.

Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution, which will distribute the film in South Africa, had nothing but praise for the film and its dedicated team. “It’s encouraging to see lighthearted, upbeat films being made by a team of strong women who have had their own unique take on the script and the production of Mrs Right Guy.”

Mrs Right Guy will release to audiences nationally on 27 May.
