Man awaits trial on charge of shooting and kidnapping gilrfriend

ALEXANDRA – Man is granted bail after allegedly shooting, hijacking estranged girlfriend and evading arrest.

A man from Springs, who is accused of shooting and injuring his estranged girlfriend in a kidnapping incident, was granted bail by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, pending the conclusion of further investigations.

The incident occurred at 6.30am on 22 January this year when the victim, of 18th Avenue, was getting into her vehicle to go to work. The accused, who was said to be wielding a gun and wearing a balaclava, allegedly pounced on her and demanded that she move over onto the passenger seat.

The victim claimed she recognised his voice and asked him what he was doing. The accused got aggressive and when she opened the door to get out, he allegedly shoved her back in and she screamed. This is said to have incensed him and he fired a shot on the ground, presumably to scare her.

She continued screaming and he allegedly shot twice, hitting her once in the upper leg and then forcing her to squat on the floor of the front passenger side. It is claimed he then drove off in the vehicle, saying they were going to Springs. The victim said he then took off the balaclava, revealing his identity as the boyfriend.

On the way, her aunt allegedly called him and, when asked if he was with her as people had witnessed the altercation, he denied her presence. This he did while covering her mouth to hid her groans from the gunshot wound pain.

When she asked to be taken to a hospital, the accused allegedly said they would fetch their kids from school so he could kill all of them, including himself, if she didn’t patch up their relationship. She claimed to have agreed and he promised to take her to Milpark Hospital.

It is said her father then called him about her and he denied knowledge of her whereabouts. This forced him to change direction, allegedly saying he was instead taking her to Witbank Hospital to avoid being tracked to nearby Milpark.

At Witbank Hospital he claimed she had been injured in an emergency, and allegedly threatened to kill her if she told nurses the truth – which she did when he went to open a file for her.

Police were called but he escaped in the victim’s vehicle. The police chased after him but were unsuccessful. He was later arrested on 16 February in Springs.

The victim is still recovering from the injury and has since lost her job.
