Budding Alex entrepreneurs graduate

ALEXANDRA – Ort SA empowers Alex entrepreneurs with much-needed business skills to run their enterprises.

A group of 31 budding Alex entrepreneurs have completed a business training programme run by Ort SA’s Skills and Enterprise Development Department.

The programme started in February and was facilitated in three-day boot camps each month on modules such as marketing, communication skills, customer service and business ethics and financial management.

The entrepreneurs were awarded certificates of attendance at a graduation ceremony held at the Thusong Youth Centre at the corner Josias Madzunya Street and 12th Avenue.

Ort SA is the winner of two prestigious awards for 2015, one being the Mail & Guardian Award for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills development; and the other being the African Corporate Excellence Award for teacher training.

Some of the participants of the programme, such as Abednigo Matu of Ayanda Mabel and Trading Co-operative, a rat cage manufacturer, had this to say, “Ort SA has given me the business knowledge that I never thought I would get. Hats-off to Ort SA.” He also thanked facilitator Rugare Gapare for teaching them how to work out the costing of products in order to determine the selling price at a profit.

“I never used to do this before and this course was such an eye-opener. From now onwards, I will follow the Ort SA training in conducting my business,” Matu added.

Another satisfied customer and graduate of the programme, Joyce Skomolo of Batho Co-operative said, “The course is good for every business person, especially budgeting and financial controls. I learned to do costing in order to avoid losses. I am now able to do the balance sheet for my construction business.”
