Bank employee and her father nabbed for bank theft
ALEXANDRA - Female bank employee and her father are detained for bank theft.
A bank employee in Benmore and her father were recently remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft.
They were denied bail pending the conclusion of an investigation of the theft of R900 000, which the employee allegedly took from the bank’s safe, part of which was found in the possession of the woman’s father.
The 24-year-old suspect, who had been employed for two years, allegedly stole the money on 25 May and didn’t report to work the following day. A colleague of hers alerted the supervisor to the missing money after noticing a discrepancy in the previous day’s closing balance of R2 million. The anomaly was verified after the money was counted.
Video footage showed the suspect entering a safe with an empty plastic bag and was seen leaving the safe with the plastic bag appearing full.
Police were informed and traced her to her Diepkloof home where her parents declined knowledge of her whereabouts and referred them to her boyfriend. The boyfriend claimed to have parted with her after spending some time at a hotel.
Police also checked with her sister who informed them that she had gone to a lawyer in Braamfontein, seemingly for advice on handing herself over to the police. Police found her with the lawyer and she admitted to the theft and told them that the bulk of the money was with the boyfriend. The police then arrested her.
On the way to the boyfriend, the police stopped the woman’s father who had a bag which they searched and found R268 000. They then arrested the father.
The two suspects were said to have claimed that it was all that remained after part of the money was taken by a team of Kempton Park police which was also investigating the case. Further investigations may shed light on this claim and also of the boyfriend’s involvement.
