With the ongoing unrest in Tshwane there have been reported cases of looting of small stores and, most recently, Central City Shopping Centre in Mabopane on 23 June, where two bodies were discovered following the looting. The Sandton Chronicle team asked local residents their opinions on the violence. Here’s what they had to say …
PHANGKE MPHAHLELE: I think the looting and destruction is wrong. It’s counter productive.
TASHA STEYN: I think it’s unacceptable. I think the protesters have pulled it out of context. And it’s scary the way it’s heading because it looks like the police can’t even control it.
NANA POOPEDI: The violence is completely unacceptable.
MELROSE BOSHOMANE: I think the violence is horrible. Of course, we know where their anger comes from. But I think it’s a bit misdirected when the protesters attack ordinary people and loot stores owned by citizens.
