No Alex team in Map Games final
ALEXANDRA - Tomorrow's finals of the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games 2016 will be contested by teams from outside Alexandra.
There will be no Alex team in the finals of the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games 2016 when they are hosted tomorrow (10 July) at the Alexandra Stadium.
This follows the elimination of both remaining teams in the semifinals, JT Black Stars and DRA Peacemakers, who were the last hope for a possible winner of the games that have been nicknamed as the ‘World Cup of Alexandra’.
Stars, which plies its trade in the Rotary League in Alexandra, was eliminated by newcomers in the Map Games, Rebels, from Reiger Park which comprises players from around the formerly Coloured and Indian-only townships of Johannesburg, while DRA was also dumped by fellow newcomers from Soweto, Braamfischer Eagles.
Rebels beat Stars 3-1 in the first leg played on 3 June and went on to knock them out of the finals with an aggregate score of 3-2 after the second leg match ended 1-0 in favour of Stars.

DRA on the other hand, which plies its trade in the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, was beaten 4-3 by the Eagles, who went to humiliate DRA 5-0 in the second leg, thereby booking their spot in the finals of newcomers only.
Rebels and the Eagles will clash tomorrow for the trophy and a whopping R140 000 in prize money.
Stars were last year’s finalists after being beaten to trophy by former Moroka Swallows and Bafana Bafana midfield star, Jabulani Mendu’s Sun City Classic from Mpumalanga.
Classic were booted of the competition in the quarterfinals by Stars, who avenged last year’s final defeat but failed to go all the way despite the numerous scoring opportunities that could have easily seen them beat the Rebels by as much as 6-0.
The ladies final will be contested by two outside team, Palace Super Falcons and Drama Queen. Alex women’s teams, Alex Ladies and Bluebirds Ladies were eliminated in the quarterfinals and group stages respectively.
The masters final will be between Alex Masters Soccer League’s Real Sundowns and Soweto’s Headbuoys. Sundowns will feature numerous legends such as Phiri himself, John Nkambule, Caesar Maphalla and many others while the Soweto legends will include the likes of Lucas Radebe and others.
