Misery of shack fire victims eased
ALEXANDRA - Good Samaritans ease the misery of the victims of a recent shack fire in 8th Avenue close to Vincent Tshabalala Road.
The misery of the victims of a recent shack fire in 8th Avenue close to Vincent Tshabalala Road was eased when the Thusong Be My Friend initiative donated clothing and blankets to the victims.
Thusong Youth Centre manager, Beauty More, who also operates the Thusong Be My Friend charity initiative, said 20 beneficiaries from the shack fire were identified to benefit from the donation which had earlier been made to the centre by Radio 702.
“It is part of our duty as the community of Alexandra to come to each other’s rescue in times of crisis and I hope these clothes, blankets and shoes for the little ones, including schoolchildren, will go a long way towards easing the burden caused by the fire,” More said as she delivered her donation to the various families.
Willie Mahai, a community leader in that section, said he did not have enough appropriate words with which to express his gratitude to all the people who raced to their rescue in their small and big ways. “As I express the gratitude of the fire victims, I would like to urge the donors to do the same for other people who might also find themselves in the same predicament as ourselves. Your help is really appreciated,” he said.
Besides the donation by Thusong Be My Friend, More said her charity has been cooking meals every day since the fateful day of the fire for both the children and adult victims of the fire.
As other members of the victim families collected the donations, others were busy repairing their shacks with new corrugated iron sheets said to have been organised by outgoing councillor, Chris Mabunda of Ward 75.
The fire destroyed 14 shacks altogether.
