Game on to test Ground One’s artificial turf
ALEXANDRA – Match to test the artificial turf as Ground One development continues
Phase one of Ground One’s development on 2nd Avenue is nearing completion with the artificial turf almost laid. The phase also includes the installation of floodlights.
This project phase sponsored by Total Sports for R8.5 million will be followed by phase two under the Joburg Development Agency which will include the construction of change rooms, offices, stands and the perimeter wall.
The project’s community liaison officer, Robert Langa, said they hoped to host a friendly game on 22 July to test the turf. “Generally, we are happy with the project which is part of a social cohesion programme.
“It has also created employment, with most of those engaged drawn from coaches and other soccer enthusiasts. They also double as security against any damage, especially by vagrants who were moved to give way to the project.”
He added that they were concerned about the pitch being smaller than the standard pitch which would have enabled them to host formal games. “This will deny us the opportunity to raise money for its upkeep by hiring it out for official games.
“But overall, it’s a positive development which will host practise and training sessions, some formal games like six-a-side competitions, games for the elderly and for children from nearby Alex High School and others, and as a venue for life skills and other training activities for the youth.”
