Alex woman takes teen girls under her wings

ALEXANDRA – A young woman takes it upon herself to groom teenage girls for success in 'dog eats dog' world of the entertainment industry.

An Alex woman recently took 10 young girls under her wing to mentor them for future success in the dog-eat-dog world of the entertainment industry.

Bonny Motsoane, the founder of Be A Woman Campaign, runs her initiative from the garage of her parents’ 4th Avenue house and said she had a dream to take young Alex girls under her wing in an effort to shape a bright future for them.

A former pupil of Liberty Community College in Bramley, Motsoane, who is popularly known in the Kasi lama Kasi (mother of all townships – Alex) as Bonny M, said she started the programme in 2013 with 24 girls but the number dropped along the way to only 10 girls.

She realised that young girls were being taken for a ride in the industry and that they needed protection from some of the sharks in the business.

“I then started the Be A Woman Campaign with the aim of grooming young girls to become the successful women they desire to be in life and ensure they are protected against some of the sharks found in the industry. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there and they certainly need this protection and grooming,” Motsoane said.

The following year, Motsoane launched Glitz magazine, which she uses as a launch pad for the girls by promoting them in the magazine, and is currently shooting a reality TV show which also features the girls.

“I haven’t given [the show] a title yet as I am busy with the shoot, after which I will then decide on the title and then pitch it with the various TV stations to be aired for audiences,” she said.

Motsoane also gives the girls dance lessons and teaches them etiquette in the garage. “I have no sponsors at the moment and all the work I do and have done so far is courtesy of funds from my mother, whom I can safely say is my financier.”

Asked where she would like to see the girls in future, Motsoane said she would like to see them as businesswomen, doctors, teachers, successful artists and so forth.

Motsoane plans to take the girls with her to New York in the future to officially launch Glitz magazine and expose the girls to the world in the hope of attracting possible contracts for them as models, actors and dancers. “We hope to stay in the US for some time to see how things pan out, but we will not forget where we come from,” she added.
