Food for Life hosts ‘Heritage Day’ in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Early Heritage Day festivities for Alex.

Heritage Day is officially celebrated on 24 September but some Alex residents marked the day a few days earlier signalling the need to make the occasion a daily experience.

The public holiday recognises the Rainbow Nation’s diverse cultures and hues which ought to be united under a Constitutional democracy.

On 18 September, parents and children were hosted at Dr Knak Primary School by non-profit organisation Food For Life, Sandton in a festival of social cohesion that brought together diverse cultures, languages and religions. They braved the inclement weather to celebrate their heritage and showcased their talent with pomp and grandeur, and shared various cuisines, music and dances.

The organisation distributed hot meals, cold drinks and ice-cream to about 1 200 guests. The organisation’s Angie Rambaran said the organisation, founded in 1974, had developed into a phenomenal global food relief programme. It currently provides 10 000 plates of food daily through 25 branches nationally.

Rambaran added that the Sandton branch had adopted Alex to help eradicate hunger and empower the youth. She said research findings indicated that hunger and poverty were causes of conflict and eradicating hunger assisted in reducing crime and making SA a better place for all. She urged everyone to join the organisation and be catalysts of change by adopting a school or contributing as little as R100 which provides 10 hot meals to needy schoolchildren.

The organisation’s national leader, Viresh Panday commended the volunteers for reaching out to communities saying it helped to bridge the gap between the wealthy and destitute by creating a hunger-free society nationally.
