Industry leaders make musical magic

JOBURG – Arts lovers want you to join in the Joys of Sharing.

Award-winning flautist, Wouter Kellerman recently teamed up with Gregory Maqoma’s Vuyani Dance Theatre and one of South Africa’s most beloved vocalists, Simphiwe Dana, to create a new show about sharing in the artistic experience called Joys of Sharing.

Speaking about the show at The Dance Space in Newtown, the three artists expressed their excitement about it, which is set to showcase on 21 and 22 October at the Lyric Theatre.

The Dance Space is the official studio of Vuyani Dance Theatre, and the rhythmically inclined men and women were ready to show a snippet of what to expect.

“For me, it’s a huge treat to get these two incredible artists together on this project,” Maqoma said about Dana and Kellerman.

Kellerman said it would be a treat to perform in a setting where dance, melody and vocals came together on an equal platform to produce something unique and exciting. “The separation of dance and music is actually a western construct. In Africa, dance and music have always been one thing.

“So when I started writing my music, there was always dance with it. Now, working with Greg, I’m really excited because, finally, we can make this happen again.”

Maqoma noted that this collaboration would be a first for Kellerman and Dana – and one to remember. “It continues the tradition of Vuyani, which has become known for its world-class collaborations and for celebrating South African talent.”

The artists came together for a short musical improvisation session and gave City Buzz a peek into the production process and how the music, dance and vocals come together to produce this one-of-a-kind show.
