Nothing will stop our noble cause, say Alex tutors
ALEXANDRA – Tamanna for Change will not allow the lack of computers to stop them from delivering tutorials to matrics.
Members of Tamanna for Change, a tutoring project for Alex High School pupils, will not allow the lack of computer systems and financial support to torpedo their noble cause of helping others to succeed.
Siyabulela Mokebe and Fernando Sibiya, who are part of a group of five students who founded Tamanna for Change, a Saturday school project at Thusong Youth Centre, know how to improvise and make do with what they have; and said that the lack of resources will not get in the way of their favourite pastime.
Because they are determined to help these pupils pass their matric, Mokebe and Sibiya said that whenever students need to research or make varsity applications online or to download school-related information, the tutors buy airtime and load it onto their cellphones for the pupils to use.
“This is all out of the love of something that you do and the desire to help others. We’re not going to allow any impediments to stop us from fulfilling our dream of seeing these children pass their matric. We shall do whatever it takes,” Mokebe said.
The other element of the project involves using those pupils who dropped out of school or failed their matric to motivate others. Sibiya added, “Peer education and motivation are known to work wonders, hence we also use it in our project.
“We take these pupils who dropped out or failed matric and go with them to various schools to hold discussions and motivational sessions to encourage the students to work hard and be committed to their books and finishing school and look forward to going to varsity too.”
The pair said they were well aware of the magnitude of the project and the resources needed to make it work, but they were not going to sit on their laurels and expect a miracle to fall from heaven.
“Corporates that would like to join us will find us struggling along the road as we cannot delay the success of these children,” Mokebe added.
