Just in time for the holidays

JOBURG – A fun-filled South African musical romp will end the year at the National Children's Theatre in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Theatre lovers are asked to join the National Children’s Theatre in a fun-filled musical romp and end the year with the South African premiere of Mr Popper’s Penguins, on stage until 23 December.

This playful, enchanting comedy will send everyone home with a happy smile and tapping feet. The production has been made possible by part of a grant of R2 million from the National Lotteries Commission.

The musical is set in the small town of Stillwater, where Mr and Mrs Popper and their two children live uneventful lives. But when a surprise package for the Poppers produces a penguin, chaos waddles into their lives.

Soon, the Poppers home and hearts are filled with not one, not two, but a whole bunch of boisterous black and white birds. But the birds have to eat – and food costs money – money that the Poppers don’t have.

Eventually, Mr Popper solves the problem by teaching the penguins to dance and taking them on a tour around the country. This family-friendly show features singing, dancing, comedy, and some valuable lessons, and is just in time for the school holidays.

The storyline teaches a valuable lesson from Mr Popper that you should never give up on your dreams, no matter how old you are or what happens in your life, you should always strive to do what you want to do and keep your passion alive.

Directed by Francois Theron, this family musical has been described as pure theatre magic which is a must-see show for the whole family.
