Gauteng East ranked 3rd in province
ALEXANDRA - Gauteng East District aims for tops in 2017 matric pass rate ranking.
The Gauteng East District of the provincial department of education has been ranked at number three among the 15 districts in the province, with 70 secondary schools where 15 4177 pupils wrote the 2016 matric exams. Alex contributes five secondary schools to the list.
The district now aims for pole position when this year’s ranking is announced early next year. The Alex schools and nearby Sandtonview High in Wynberg contributed 7 276 matriculants. Of them, 6 802 wrote the examinations and 5 918 achieved a range of pass marks.
The district director Mnyamezeli Ndevu said the achievement in performance was an improvement of 3.1 per cent from 83.89 per cent in 2015 to 87 per cent last year. Despite this, there was a general percentage drop in the performance of Alex schools, except for the two top performers with KwaBhekilanga Secondary School improving from 90.9 per cent in 2015 to 92.86 per cent last year.
Alex High School improved from 89.1 per cent to 91.98 per cent.
Eastbank High School dropped from 76.5 per cent to 75.4 per cent.
Minerva Secondary School dropped from 66.5 per cent to 62.88 per cent.
Realogile Secondary School dropped from 64.7 per cent to 60.89 per cent.
Ndevu said that to maintain the upward trend in the rankings, the top 15 schools with 100 per cent results should sustain their performance, schools with 100 and fewer in Grade 12 must achieve 100 per cent, 30 other schools must improve by at least 7 per cent while 25 more schools should aim for a 25 per cent increase.
