Boitumelong forges ahead
ALEXANDRA – The centre has 92 children and six qualified teachers.
Boitumelong Early Learning Centre, which was founded by Thandi Mkhize 35 years ago, nurtures the children of Alexandra with a sound and government-approved early childhood development programme.
Speaking in an interview with Alex News, principal Nokulunga Ncube said they were thrilled to accommodate children, describing this as ‘a sign of confidence from the community of Alexandra in our role as the nurturing gateway for these toddlers on their long educational journey to becoming tomorrow’s matric stars’.
Ncube said Boitumelong’s founding mother was assisted by Anglo American, which funded the centre. It has now partnered with the departments of social development and education and moved away from being a daycare centre to being a preschool.
On the payroll of the Department of Basic Education, it is often used by the University of South Africa as a training ground for its students involved in early childhood development programmes.
“We’re grateful for this assistance, which goes a long way in our daily operations, culminating in favourable outcomes for the children,” said Ncube.
