Police visibility continues despite end of festive season

ALEXANDRA — Police searched vehicles for illegal and dangerous weapons and contraband, and were on the lookout for traffic law violators.

Alexandra and Joburg Metro police’s joint festive-season security operations would continue indefinitely, said Alexandra police spokesperson, Lieutenant Allie Kodisang during a stop-and-search operation at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 13th Avenue in Alexandra.

Kodisang said similar exercises were being conducted elsewhere in the township and are part of their routine operations. “The operation tends to intensify more during the festive season due to heightened criminal activity that takes advantage of the public’s relaxed mood,” he said.

Police officers, he said, stop and search vehicles for illegal and dangerous weapons and other contraband, while Metro officers look for motorists with outstanding tickets, faulty vehicles, unlicensed drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol and other illegal substances.

He said while they had picked up some transgressors, no weapons were found, which meant criminals got wind of the roadblock, or that there was an increase in compliance.
