‘Drunk’ suspects hijack taxi driver

ALEXANDRA – A 'drunk' man allegedly pointed a gun at a taxi driver and his accomplice got into the vehicle on the passenger's side and forced him out.

A taxi driver who was hijacked in Tsutsumani on 22 January by two men who distracted him by pretending to be drunk recovered his Toyota Avanza shortly after the incident happened.

Alex Police Station spokesperson, Lieutenant Allie Kodisang, said the driver was trying to park the car in the driveway of his boss’ house at about 8.30pm, when he noticed a man urinating on the pavement and another, apparently drunk, crossing the road.

When he put the brakes on to avoid running the man over, the ‘drunk’ man allegedly turned around and pointed a gun at him while the urinating accomplice got into the vehicle on the passengers’ side and forced him out. The gun-wielding accomplice got into the driver’s seat and they drove off. After the victim alerted his boss, the owner of the taxi, its tracker was activated and the car was found abandoned in a street nearby shortly afterwards.

In another incident, that took place in Alex the day before, at about 10pm, a 16-year-old girl was accosted by two men carrying beer bottles on 20th Avenue, and allegedly abducted and raped in a park nearby. Kodisang said the victim, who lives in 18th Avenue, was on her way home when the alleged incident happened.

One of the men covered her head with a jacket and the other threatened to stab her with a broken bottle if she screamed. They are said to have dragged her to the Eastbank Park, where they allegedly took turns raping her without using condoms. One of the suspects, a taxi driver, is known to the victim. No arrests have been made.
