Emmanuel Sithole: A fake name or not?

The Mozambican national that was recently stabbed and stoned to death in a suspected act of xenophobia in a street in Alexandra was going by two names.
When he was killed, news broke out that it was Emmanuel Sithole.
However, when an Alex News reporter, Nkuleleko Zilibokwe, went to the memorial service, which was attended by the wife of former President Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, he brought back the obituary to the Caxton offices which featured two names of the deceased including Manuel Josias and Emmanuel Sithole.
When asked about the discrepancy, the reporter said the deceased was using two names; Manuel Josias as being his Mozambican name and Emmanuel Sithole as his South African name. Even some of his relatives who were vending in the street with him confirmed his name as Emmanuel Sithole and they too were Sitholes as well.

It is common practice for Mozambican and Zimbabweans to use local names and surnames in order to blend in when they arrive in South Africa. However, Sithole’s sister had denied that her brother was using a fake name.

According to News24, his sister Thando said his name was Emmanuel Josias Sithole. She told this to News24 outside the Alexandra Magistrates Court, where four men appeared for her brother’s murder.
She was reacting to remarks made at a Freedom Day celebration last week, when President Jacob Zuma said Sithole had used an alias while he lived in South Africa.
Thando Sithole said, “The thing is my brother was killed. Jacob Zuma was supposed to focus on those people to get into jail. Surnames and what, he was supposed to ask the family before telling the public.”

She said she did not know if her brother was in South Africa legally, but his passport was used to obtain his death certificate.
